Motivational Monday- Love Yourself

"Love yourself first and everything else will fall into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world." -Lucille Ball inpsirational quote

Last Tuesday, I started a series of inspirational quotes from women to celebrate International Women’s Month and National Women’s Day, which was this previous Tuesday. I have a group post being published tomorrow, so I decided to do it a day early this week.

Lucille Ball, otherwise known as Lucy in “I Love Lucy”  is an inspiration of her own for so many reasons. She starred in her own self-produced shows, for one, but she was a noteworthy entrepreneur for both males and females.

In 1948,  when Lucy was 37 years old, CBS hired her to do a radio show called “My Favorite Husband.” In 1950, when Lucy was 39-years-old CBS wanted to turn her radio show into a television show. Lucy insisted that her real-life husband Desi played her television husband. CBS was reluctant because Desi was Cuban and it was a bit of an unconventional choice at the time. Lucy and Desi decided to start their own production company; Desilu Productions, and take their show on the road. It wasn’t until after the show proved to be a hit that CBS decided to buy it and put it on the air.  The rest is history after they started production on “I Love Lucy” in the summer of 1951 when Lucy was 39-years-old.

For those who don’t know, it’s extremely difficult for an older woman to find roles in the entertainment industry. She was starring in B movies up until then, so to really find a place for herself at that age is even more exceptional.

Although Desilu produced a string of hits in the sitcom genre including the Dick Van Dyke Show, My Three Sons and The Andy Griffith Show, Lucy knew her company must diversify to maintain their status as market leaders. Television stalwarts such as Mission Impossible, The Untouchables and Star Trek – which all became entertainment juggernauts for decades – were produced under Lucy’s leadership.

If you’re interested, here are ten more inspirational lessons from Lucy.

I find this quote important because if we live in a harsh world, full of people trying to tear us down. We must have something to hold on to, if we are really going to fight for our dreams. That’s not to say, if we don’t love ourselves, no one else will.  I have many people in my life, who loved me when I didn’t love myself and I’m sure others do too, but it’s a completely different ball game when there is something we are setting out to accomplish.

People don’t want to be successful, they don’t want you to try to make the world a better place and they will try to stop you. If you love yourself, you have an extra layer of confidence and protection that they can’t take away from you, if they manage to stop you from accomplishing your goals. Don’t let them take that away from you. You are more than your accomplishments and no matter what, you are worthy of love.
